Tattoo Removal at our Boston area MedSpa
The reasons for this vary:
- the tattoos may be poorly placed or executed
- the site may have become infected
- the person may simply have outgrown whatever impulse led to the tattoo.
Because tattoos are placed fairly deeply under the skin, previous removal methods (including excision, dermabrasion, chemical removal, and the earliest lasers) caused unacceptable levels of scarring. Today, newer lasers are more gentle, more effective, and less likely to lead to scarring, making this the treatment of choice for removing tattoos. At Advanced Laser & Skin Center we use the Quanta Q Plus Laser. The Q-Plus C is the first, only, and most powerful Q-switched laser which combines a Nd:Yag @ 1064 nm / 532 nm and a Ruby @ 694 nm: three true wavelengths which, with the highest achievable energies, efficiently target all tattoo colors and pigmented lesions.1 The pigment in the tattoo absorbs the laser's light, breaking up the areas of dye. The body's immune system then removes the shattered pigment over the next several weeks, leading to visible lightening of the tattoo.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
Our Q-switched laser emits a focused beam of light over the tattoo, causing the tattoo ink to absorb the energy. Once this has occurred, the pigment colors of the tattoo begin to fragment allowing the body to gradually absorb and reduce the color.
What happens after the treatment?
Immediately after laser exposure, the treated area turns white & swells slightly. This whiteness usually fades in 30 minutes. Over the next several days, blisters may form and then a scab or thin crust may follow. Often the scab is the same color as the tattoo, because the superficial tattoo ink has been reduced into this crust. The skin usually returns to normal in about 7 to 10 days.
How many treatments are needed?
Depending on the size and the colors of the area to be treated, it will take anywhere from 6 to 12 treatments in most cases. For more extensive tattoos it may take more treatments. Expect to come in once every six weeks for your treatments.
Is it painful?
With our new technology many of our clients tell us it simply feels like a rubber band lightly snapping on ones skin. The discomfort is related to the depth of the color of the tattoo. However, if needed, we can apply a topical anesthetic cream 30-45 minutes prior to treatment for your comfort.
What can I expect after laser tattoo removal?
The area may be red, as if mildly sunburned, for one to two weeks. There may be some bruising, and with deeper tattoos bleeding is not uncommon. The area may be treated with an antibiotic ointment and a bandage applied. Recovery times depend on the extent of the treatment and the individual's capacity to heal. Sensitivity may continue for several weeks, and there may be discoloration and a change in skin texture in the area, which will gradually improve. You should avoid exposing the treated area to the sun, as this may retard healing. You may not notice significant results until several treatments have been completed. Most people are satisfied with the pigment removal achieved through laser treatment.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are generally minimal, but may include hypopigmentation (a lack of skin color), hyperpigmentation (too much color in the skin), minor blistering or soreness for a few weeks, an infection of the tattoo site, or failure to completely remove the tattoo. There is also a very small chance that permanent scarring will occur at the tattoo site.
What is the cost of Tattoo Removal?
The cost depends a lot on the size and the color of the tattoo to be removed. A small tattoo about 2 inches x 2 inches starts at $100 per treatment.
